"Souper Bowl
Sunday" event will begin on January 4, 2015. Our famous football
field will be displayed in the Kaiser Auditorium, and St. John's vs
Hunger will kick off at 9:00 AM. If you are not familiar with
this event, the youth group displays a football field, and we take
donations of non-perishable food items. You bring us the
donation, and we place the items on the field. For every 5 items we receive, we get to move 10 yards on the football field.
We display this field until the official "Souper Bowl Sunday",
February 1, at which time the Youth will also collect monetary
donations in big soup pots after the 10:45 AM Worship Service.
The national program began in 1990 with a simple prayer: "Lord, even
as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of
those who are without a bowl of soup to eat". This prayer was
delivered by Brad Smith, then a seminary intern at Spring Valley
Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC. Since then, the youth
across our country have generated more than $90 million for soup
kitchens, food banks, and other local charities across our country.
This is the 13th year for St. John's Windish to participate.
Over the years, we have donated over $3,500 and 2,500 food items to our
local community. Help us make this year the best one yet.
Come to the Auditorium after the service on February 1st for a bowl of homemade
soup, our way of saying thank you for what you have helped us to
achieve.
The food items will be donated to the local food shelter . The
monetary donations will be donated to the "Souper Bowl for Caring"
national program.
