Book discussion in the Banko Lounge at 9:00 AM:
Our new book selection is Room, a 2010 novel by Irish-Canadian
author Emma Donoghue.  The story is told from the perspective of a five-year-old boy, Jack, who is being held captive in a small room
along with his mother.  He was born in Room and has never known anything other than this very small world.  It is a celebration of resilience and the limitless bond between parent and child and a brilliantly executed novel about what it means to journey from one
world to another.

The ten-year-olds, plucky Grace and frail Tilly, go in search for both the missing Mrs. Creasy and God, but turn up a staggering number of unsuspected hidden truths as well as a drainpipe apparition of Jesus.

blurred. It is hard to believe this is Setterfield's debut novel,

March 15 Book discussion at 9:00 AM in the Banko Lounge.

The selected book is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

"Set on the prosperous Long Island of 1922,The Great Gatsby
provides a critical social history of America during the Roaring
Twenties within its narrative. That era, known for unprecedented economic prosperity, the evolution of jazz music, flapper culture,
and bootlegging and other criminal activity, is plausibly depicted
in Fitzgerald's novel. Fitzgerald uses these societal developments
of the 1920s to build Gatsby's stories from simple details like automobiles to broader themes like Fitzgerald's discreet allusions
to the organized crime culture which was the source of Gatsby's fortune. Fitzgerald educates his readers about the garish society
of the Roaring Twenties by placing a timeless, relatable plotline
within the historical context of the era.

The selected book is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
by
Rebecca Skloot Henrietta Lacks was an African
American migrant in Baltimore, a mother of five, who met
with unfortunate death at the young age of 30 in 1951 due
to cervical cancer.
This non-fiction book is about Henrietta’s cells that were taken for analysis, and subsequently
distributed to hospitals, colleges and other institutions throughout the world for research, without the knowledge
of her family.  These cells came to be known as the HeLa
cells.
Medical scientists discovered the nature of various diseases and also helped in finding out vaccines and
medicines for polio, cancer, fertility and many more.  This
was all done without her family’s knowledge.  The family remained poor, despite the fact that they were indirectly
helpful for many medical innovations. The author of the
book, Rebecca Skloot, is a science writer who met the
Lacks' family while investigating the background of HeLa
Cells.  This process took an entire decade to research.

March 5 Book discussion at 9:00 AM in the Banko Lounge:
The book "I am Malala" covers the entire story before the
October 9, 2012 attack on Malala and her life story after that attack.  The book is written with the help of Christina Lamp, a
British journalist, and is all about Malala's life and her story.
The story begins with a different scene, revealing a girl who
likes "Ugly Betty" and the cooking show "Masterchef".  She
worries about her clothes and her hair, but also has an iron determination that comes from experience beyond her 16 years.  Later on in the book, you will read about the time she was
coming from school to home when suddenly a gunman came to
her bus and asked "Who is Malala among you?"  At that
moment Malala said, "I didn't even observe that I'm being killed right at the moment."  Whatever she did and faced before and after
the attack is included in this book.
Please plan to join our discussion.
